When operating by 2015, NSLS-II will produce extremely intense x-rays, carried by beamlines to scientific instruments used to do experiments. These instruments must be contained in enclosures to keep people away from direct contact with the x-rays.

Shielding electromagnetic radiation interference begins with an understanding of its frequency spectrum. Since all radiated energy occurs in wave form, Interference can be identified by its frequency range within this spectrum. Frequency is expressed in Hertz or cycles per second. The diagram on the opposite page shows where each type of radiated energy occurs in the electromagnetic spectrum. The lowest frequencies are in a range represented by electrical power and AM radio; the highest in the range represented by gamma rays, which are used in medical linear accelerators. Throughout the spectrum, each frequency range may require its own special shielding design. In many of today’s projects, the modern designer and builder must contend with more than one- frequency band at a time. A modern hospital, for instance, may require as many as 5 different shielding solutions. These include:
1. Magnetic shielding for a 60 Hz power substation.
2. Magnetic and EMl shielding for MRI's.
3. Radio frequency/EMI shielding for sensitive medical equipment.
4. X-Ray shielding for diagnostic X-Ray equipment.
5. Gamma ray shielding for a linear accelerator.
